2015, HD video and live performance, commissioned by LABA House of Study Heart Island, just off the coast of the Bronx, has been New York City’s potter’s field for generations. No one is permitted to visit the dead except for the Rikers Island inmates who tend their graves. Each audience member is given an envelope that contains a hand-painted piece of paper with the name of a person who is buried on Heart Island. At a certain point in the performance live narration encourages them to speak the person’s name, an act of public morning for the city’s dead.
